The Black City – Fabulously Fabled!
Despite two natural disasters in the 17th century, the Sicilian city of Catania developed into an important centre of commerce and a tourist destination.

The lava rock was important when rebuilding the city and an ever present reminder, in both churches and on the ground. You will find lava at one of the most famous tourist attractions, the Fontana dell’Elefante. Located in the centre of the Piazza del Duomo, this fountain features a black elephant made from solidified lava standing enthroned over the water basin, a stone tower on its back. The implied symbolism has never been clearly understood to this day, but is supposed to represent qualities such as determination and strength. This is emphasised by its Sicilian name “Liotru”, derived from the name of a magician who was supposed to have used an elephant for transport.

The Parco Villa Bellini is a peaceful little place to relax in; it is dedicated to the celebrated composer Vincenzo Bellini. The park feels almost like paradise; its staircase leading through flowerbeds, past fountains and cosy alcoves.

A visit to fabled Catania is therefore an absolute must.
In the summer months we fly every Sunday to Catania from Berne.
