Corsica – A rich and rocky paradise for hikers and boulderers
Corsica not only captures hearts with its bays, charming villages and lush flora and fauna, but the island also boasts a wealth of rocks and rugged mountain ranges:

In times gone by, mineral treasures, such as iron, manganese, copper and even silver-bearing lead were mined on the island. Today, the purple granite rock that falls away steeply into the sea is a reminder of the richness of the minerals in the ground.

The famous rocky peaks of Bavella, almost supernatural in appearance due to erosion, are also a big attraction for Nature lovers.
Water and wind have eaten away at the granite rock, creating these cavities, or “taffoni”.
And it’s not just mineralogists who are fascinated by Corsica’s sedimentary, metamorphic and magmatic rock, but the strangely sculptured limestone rocks are also a real paradise for hikers and boulders (“bouldering” = climbing without ropes). One large, well-known bouldering area is the prehistoric rock of Capineru, near Bonifacio in the south of the island.
Bonifacio itself is built on a giant limestone rock. The houses in the old town appear almost to hover over the precipice. Here too, the forces of Nature have burrowed grottos in the sandstone.

There are also smaller spots for beginners in the north of the coastal area around Calvi.

Discover the unique, natural landscapes of Corsica and travel to Calvi from Bern and Zurich with Rhomberg Reisen every Sunday.
