Sporting news from the west – the Stade de Bordeaux is complete
Looking towards the European Football Championships in France in 2016, the city of Bordeaux has built a new stadium which will become the new playing venue for FC Girondins de Bordeaux. Construction work began two years ago with an estimated budget of ca. 180 million CHF and was completed on schedule in May 2015. The Stade Chaban Delmas was officially opened on Monday 18th May and on the following Saturday, the first football match took place between Girondins Bordeaux and HSC Montpellier.

The Swiss Architectural Office Herzog & de Meuron, which was awarded the contract to design the stadium, has a great deal of experience in stadium design and was responsible for the beautiful Allianz Arena in Munich, the St. Jakobs Stadium in Basel and the nest-shaped Olympic Stadium in Beijing. So it’s not surprising that they have come up trumps with this new and highly modern construction in white, made from almost a thousand poles placed around the stadium which mirror the local pine trees.

Five matches will be held in this stadium during Euro 2016, including a quarter final. And also some rugby matches too, such as the semi-final of the Top 14, the highest men’s league in French Rugby Union on 5/6 June 2015, when 42,000 fans will be cheering on their teams.

For all football and rugby fans, Bordeaux can be reached very easily from Zurich every Thursday and Sunday. Flights can be booked direct via www.helvetic.com or by phoning the Service Center on +41 (0)44 270 85 00.

If you hire a car for your stay in Bordeaux, you receive a 5% discount off the hire price with Sunny Cars. This offer is valid for new bookings until 30th June 2015.
