Palma de Mallorca – tranquil yet varied
The range of activities available on the largest of the Balearic Islands is as diverse as the type of holiday guests who visit.
The climate, the landscape, the sandy beaches, the island's culinary delights (such as typical Majorcan sausages, rice and Ensaimada - a circular pastry with a diameter of up to 50cm): are all unique and varied, changing from region to region.
The north of the island, for example, has a completely different atmosphere: at Cap Formentor, marked by a lighthouse christened "Meeting Point of the Winds" by the Majorcans, you will encounter a somewhat stony and coarse natural environment. From here, savour the wonderful views as far as the horizon; it's the place to recharge your batteries and leave the hustle and bustle of Palma behind you.

If you find yourself crossing the Sierra Tramuntana, it's well worth visiting the village of Soller. For some variety, there are a couple of nice museums to visit, but the most beautiful sight is very close at hand, namely the "Jardines de Alfabia". The entrance allée alone is marvellous, romantic and languorous, leading us through ornate enclosures with shadowy pergolas, hanging gardens and impressive grounds filled with trees, decorated with sculptures from a forgotten era. www.jardinesdealfabia.com

You then have the choice of returning to the excitement of the city of Palma in your hire car, or enjoying the 27.5 km long route in the historical "Tren de Soller", which has been in operation since 1912. Since last year, the Jardines de Alfabia has even had its own station.

Helvetic Airways flies to Palma de Mallorca from Berne on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
