Thanks to its cultural, culinary and scenic attractions, the Southern Italian region of Apulia has long since become one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe.
However, exploring all six of its provinces is a tall order, even by car. With such an ideal climate, taking a bike can be an active and attractive alternative.

The Murge plateau is abundant with unique landscapes dotted with hills covered in almond and olive tree plantations. This is also, where the light-coloured tuff comes from, with which local houses and churches and even entire towns, like the town of Matera, are built.
The mystical castle “Castel del Monte”, located in the Alta Murgia National Park, is the region’s crowning glory.

Certain sections of the Via Appia Antica, the ancient road dating as far back as the 4th century BC, are popular destinations for cyclists. The road, which connects Rome and Brindisi, played an important role in the transport and trade system flourishing between Italy and the Orient. Be sure to make detours via historic towns such as Canosa di Puglia, Ándria or Bitonto – they are all definitely well worth a visit.

But Apulia’s many miles of coastal paths – past tranquil villages, through refreshingly salty sea air – are also ideal for cycling.

Apulia – a rugged but attractive and unparalleled landscape. Helvetic Airways has increased its number of flights to Bari and now heads for the Apulian capital 6 times a week. Flight schedule Bari
