Bordeaux – the secret cultural capital of France
Bordeaux will be once again be a destination for direct flights from Zurich from April 2015.
The history, culture and lifestyle of Bordeaux have much to offer.
Founded in the 3rd century BC as a Celtic settlement called Burdigala, it soon grew into a beautiful and prosperous city with impressive architecture.
The viticulture introduced by the Romans made wine a sought-after commodity even at that time and helped the city blossom for centuries, until a large part of it was destroyed by an earthquake in the 6th century AD and Bordeaux lost its status as a kingdom. It was not until the 18th century that Bordeaux enjoyed a revival.
Thanks to its historic Old Town, a world-famous waterfront promenade and great museums, Bordeaux is once again considered one of France’s most attractive cultural and university cities. A good third of its population is made up of students.
Its attractiveness is enhanced by a warm climate in the summer and mild weather in the winter. The Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde moderate the hot temperatures in the summer, and the miles of dense pine forests protect the city from winter’s cold Atlantic winds.

Did you know by the way that Bordeaux was voted best European destination? The capital of Aquitaine beat out Lisbon for top spot in the final. More information at www.francebleu.fr
